Sunderland are closing in on the signature of Marcos Angeleri from Argentine side Estudiantes.
The defender's agent is to travel to England for talks with Steve Bruce, with the Black Cats boss looking for a cheaper option after being put off by Tottenham's valuation of Alan Hutton, who spent the second half of the season on loan at the Stadium of Light.
Spurs reportedly want £9 million for Hutton, while the Argentina international would cost just £2m according to local press.
The 27-year-old Angeleri missed out on Argentina's World Cup squad due to injury.
