Oldham are hoping to have a new manager in place within the next couple of weeks.
The Latics have interviewed 10 candidates after receiving around 50 applicants to succeed Dave Penney in the hot seat at Boundary Park.
"We are making progress, although slower than we would like," said chief executive Alan Hardy.
Meanwhile, released midfielder Danny Whitaker has agreed to join ex-Latics boss John Sheridan at Chesterfield.
