Geoff Horsfield will remain at Vale Park as assistant manager after calling time on his playing career.
The 36-year-old, who suffered a series of niggling injuries last season, has been studying for his UEFA B coaching licence with the intention of eventually taking up a manager`s position.
Having played for Fulham, Birmingham and West Brom, Horsfield joined Port Vale last summer as a player/coach but is now fully focused on assisting Micky Adams at the helm.
Horsfield told The Sentinel: "I am still learning, but working alongside Micky has been great for me.
"He has a wealth of experience - if you can't learn the ropes from Micky, you'll not learn from anyone."
